WowWee Chimp
« on: November 09, 2017, 05:52:00 PM »

So I scored this little creepy bastard (also adorable) for $20!

Should I fix him up, but keep him as is?
Add a more sophisticated board to take advantage of the 8 (!!!) motors?
Strip the skin off, and make into something different?

You've seen me. I don't tan.

The teeth kinda match, though...

I have been digging trenches for my new plumbing. :ok:

So what do you think? I would need a serious board to handle 8 motors and 5 sensors. I guess I'll just fix the small tears in the latex, and touch up his paint.

An Arduino could handle the 5 sensor inputs.  It also has 16 outputs for the motors.... Are they really motors or servos?  If servos only 6 of the 16 outputs can be used for servo control.  Need more servo/PWM options then look at the Arduino Mega board which will give you 14 servo/PWM outputs of the 54 outputs.

All of the descriptions define them as motors, but I believe it's probably a combination. Nobody seems to have really hacked these things, which isn't surprising for two reasons:

1) It's creepy as hell on it's own.
2) They were about $180 new!

I will have to carefully pull his skin so I can see why he has a lazy eye. I'll see what drives the thing when I get it apart. I'm swamped with renovations right now, so it might be a while.

looking on line, it looks like it is controlled by a Basic Stamp 2.  If that is true, you can customize the programming through the Parallex Basic Stamp Editor.

Really? Hell, that's what my Owl you helped program runs on. That would be awesome!

Seems they are all motors, but some have potentiometers and limit switches.

I really want to tear him apart, but don't have the time. I guess I'll research everything at work, and map it all out ahead of time. :great:
